In our previous blog, we brought to you the incredible success stories of common people of our country who with their hard work and noble efforts have earned the most prestigious award of the country, the Padma Shri.
These ordinary people, with humble backgrounds, and modest living approach, have done some extraordinary things and dedicated their lives in uplifting the needy.
They were honoured on November 8, 2021 by Indian President, Ram Nath Kovind. He felicitated 141 awardees with the Padma Awards for the year 2020. The coveted ceremony was originally to be held in 2020 but owing to Covid-19 pandemic, it was organized in 2021. The list included 141 awardees wherein 7 were felicitated with Padma Vibhushan, 16 were honoured with Padma Bhushan and 118 were bestowed with Padma Shri Awards.
Let us have a look at these ordinary people with extraordinary journey.
Harekala Hajabba: An orange vendor hailing from Mangaluru, Karnataka, Harekala Hajabba received the Padma Shri for his noble deed of building a school in his village through his earnings. He is lovingly called “Akshara Santa” or the “Letter Saint”. He is committed to spreading the light of education and wants children to gain the knowledge of power. His good work is getting recognition from everywhere and he is proving to be an inspiration for all.
Usha Chaumar: Belonging to Rajasthan, Usha Chaumar comes from a Dalit family in Deegh village near Bharatpur. She started manual scavenging when she was just seven years old. Her work continued even after marriage. When she was 24, she met Dr Bindeshwar Pathak, founder of Sulabh International, and under his direction, she became a part of the NGO Nai Disha that worked for the substitute defensible lifestyle for manual scavengers. Now, she is the president of Sulabh International. She received the Padma Shri.
Benichandra Jamatia (Posthumous): He was born in Maharani, Tripura and was a Tipuri Indian folk writer and litterateur. He was the first to introduce the Baul singing tradition of West Bengal in the Kokborok language. He was given the Padma Shri.
Trinity Saioo: Also known as Turmeric Trinity, Trinity Saioo hails from Mulieh village, West Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya. She has been working significantly with the Lakadong Variety of turmeric. Saioo has been helping women and teaching them methods of organic farming. She was awarded with the Padma Shri.
Sundaram Verma: Hailing from Sikar, Rajasthan, Sundaram Verma is credited for dry-land agroforestry. He is the spreader of agro-biodiversity conservation and rainwater harvesting. He studied dry-land farming from Indian Agricultural Research Institute in New Delhi through Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK). His technique can prove useful in growing all kinds of trees with just one litre of water. Verma has so far planted over 50,000 trees. He has been awarded with the Padma Shri.
